Boston was a good time

After a 2.5 hour drive we finally made it to Boston Saturday night. After dinner we ended up drinking at Goodbar. It was a really fun time and only $10 cover which I wasn’t expecting to be so cheap…

Some highlights from the night… “t-surfing”, Picc not allowed into the resturant, Tequila shots, Meeting up with Teddy, Picc, Sean and Mike going home in a limo and who could forget the white shamrock tie…(thanks Mandy)

Maybe Mandy can chime in with more about the night.

Anyway it was a fun road-trip.

Here are a few pictures from the night.

Some Dogs, Football and a New Bike

Nick got a new bike and I got a new football. So what else is there to do, but throw the football and do some wheelies on the bike?

WT Cars

So a friend and I were driving to get a Duchess E&C (2 for $3 for the next couple of weeks, by the way) and we saw a Corvette convertible. She made a comment that she’s always thought of Corvettes as WT (White Trash) cars. Although I admit to being WAY more attracted to a Corvette hard top than a Corvette convertible, (this may be the product of dating a Corvette Z06 addict) I wouldn’t ever consider a Corvette WT material. As a treat to our more oblivious readers, maybe Matt could elaborate a little on what makes a Corvette a Corvette, and why it attracts such a fan base.

I hate mice.

So my family discovered that we had mice in our attic this winter.   The mice were partying every night above our heads while we tried to sleep, and this being the first evidence of rodents in the 25 years of owning our house, my parents were pretty concerned.  They took different approaches.  My mom refused to go in the attic and put all of the responsibility on my father, who responded by declaring war — literally — on the mice that had invaded our otherwise serene environment.

I had no issue with the mice, I slept soundly through their fun upstairs and had faith in the various traps my dad set out.  They were doing their thing, and I was doing mine.  A few days after we set the traps, we killed about 4 mice and haven’t heard anything from them since.

UNTIL, I realized I had a crack in my windshield and called Norwalk’s Glass Doctor in to replace it.  He did a great job, but called me outside mid-job to let me know that I had a MOUSE NEST under my hood.  The thought of the mice climbing under my hood leaving droppings behind drives me nuts.

So really, no other point to this story except that mice can get into the tiniest of spaces and even if you keep the cleanest of cars, they’re still probably crapping under your hood.

Nasa Space Images

I never think about how cool the stuff we(humans) can do in space.  Here are a few images I got in an email today.  The earth just looks amazing from orbit.

St. Patrick’s Day in Boston

Matt and I are trekking up to Beantown for the only ‘holiday’ I know that is incomplete without debauchery. Last year we took a day trip to the famous Boston Aquarium on St. Paddy’s and had a great time having dinner alone and avoiding the $30 covers and drunk leprechauns. This year, we’ve decided to give the bar scene a go. My good “Irish” friend Sean called Boston not only the “greatest” but the “most Irish” city in the US so I’m expecting only great things from this weekend.

We reeeeeeeeeeaaaaally don’t want to pay a ridiculous cover, but I’m expecting to get flanked by a minimum of $15, which I AM willing to part with provided the drink deals are decent. Seeing as I hate the thickness of Guinness, even $1 Guinness drafts wouldn’t have me falling all over myself.

If you’ve been to Boston bars on or around St. Patrick’s Day, let us know where the good deals and good bands are.

The world will stop turning tomorrow at 5:30pm, when all of the Starbucks coffee shops in the US will close for remedial training of it’s baristas.  Seriously.  Where will people get their venti mocha skim non-fat iced lattes with 2 shots of espresso?

CEO Howard Schultz ordered the emergency training to give the baristas valuable skills they should have learned in their ordinary 40-hour new “partner” training.  This includes learning the “free pour,” which I will not be elaborating on.

Sooo if you like Starbucks, get your fix tomorrow morning.

The Gold Guys

The Academy Awards were held last night and instead of watching them, because they tend to be slightly anti-climatic for me, I’ll just post some of the winners that I care about.  For example, best animated film.

Best Animated Film: Ratatouille - Yes, I may have seen this 4 times.

Best Supporting Actress:  Tilda Swinton - she sketched me out in Michael Clayton, so… mission accomplished I suppose.

Best Writing (Orig. Screenplay):  Juno - come to redbox already!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand that’s pretty much all I care about.

Really?!

Seconds after I post a synopsis and review for the Academy Award nominated “Gone Baby Gone,” a movie highlighting the horror of how too many children in this country are neglected by their own parents, Fox News runs a story with VIDEO of a nanny carrying around INFANT twin babies by their clothes and handling them like plastic dolls, doing her own thing while the one baby is nearly falling off of the couch. What is wrong with child caregivers? Since when have small children become so disposable? It makes me sick. I’ll post the video if I can track it down.

I found it, and I also should note that the lazy devil nanny ISN’T being charged… the mother turned the video over to cops and they said there wasn’t enough evidence to charge… Even if there was no physical damage, WHAT ABOUT CHILD ABUSE? OR neglect by a caretaker, OR child endangerment, OR failure to act, I’d prosecute that careless POS. I hope she never works again.

How to study

There are many ways to study and I’m not going to claim to be an expert by any means. That being said, I know what helped me through college with a GPA I’m proud of. I’ve sat through classes and listened to professors lecture on how to study for their tests, and I’ve tried a few strategies. The only strategy that works for me is to write out your notes. This is a very repetitive strategy, but if you really want to study and learn material, I feel it’s the only way. Even still, this doesn’t help you if you don’t pay attention to lectures in classes. The easiest way to do well is to read your teacher during class and get a feel for what they are going to test you on. Most of the teachers I had in school were willing to work with the class to help them succeed. I know there are plenty of teachers who won’t, but I’ve never seen a hard working student get turned away.

What’s important to middle schoolers?

I’m hanging out with my next-door neighbor Caroline. As a special treat for our chestbump readers, they want to let adults (and those misinformed) in on what’s hot in their worlds. Consider it saving grace for parents of middle schoolers or just basic info for anyone out there wondering what Gossip Girl is. We’ll start with Caroline, a sixth grader in Connecticut. A drumroll, please …
